Product Overview
This module explains various types of technology available for the college
classroom including ways to use the technology effectively in teaching
the adult learner. Topics include slide presentations, the Internet, electronic
assessment and grading tools, software and communication tools, and course
management tools. The sections included in this module are as follows:
Section 1: Equipment in the Classroom
Section 1 provides a brief overview of a variety of equipment that can
be used in the adult classroom to enhance learning, increase student engagement,
and expand access to information and resources. It begins with some basic
guidelines for using instructional technology and the benefits of doing
so from the perspective of the instructor, the student, and the institution.
Common obstacles are also discussed with tips for preventing or overcoming
the obstacle.
Section 2: The Internet as a Learning
Tool
Section 2 discusses the Internet as a learning tool and provides instructors
specific strategies for using the Internet to enhance learning and assist
students in developing information management skills required for success
in almost any workplace. Specific guidelines are suggested for efficient
teaching of informational management skills, specifically as they relate
to use of the Internet.
Section 3: Electronic Assessment and
Grading Tools
Section 3 provides an overview of electronic assessment tools commonly
available to instructors. Specific guidelines for finding and using this
kind of educational technology are proposed for instructors using this
type of tool, including technical considerations.
Section 4: Software, CD-ROMS, and Communication
Tools
Section 4 discusses common software and communication tools available
to the instructor to enhance student learning in and out of the classroom
environment. Specific software tools include elements of the Microsoft
Office Suite that develop skills essential in the workplace and other
more focused software for specific teaching goals. Additionally, related
tools and resources are discussed such as image libraries, tutorials,
simulations, and so forth.
Section 5: Course Management Tools
The last section of this module provides an overview of course management
tools that can be used for either strictly online learning or as additions
in face-to-face classrooms forming a hybrid course. Several common features
of the most popular course management tools are discussed. Tips for using
these tools to enhance elements of the face-to-face classroom situation
are also provided.
